How to move to a new smartphone

Switching to a new smartphone is an exciting experience – it brings the promise of new technology and features, possibly an updated operating system and often an improved user experience. But before you can unlock the full potential of your new device, there’s one major hurdle to overcome: moving your data, apps, and settings from your old phone to your new phone.

In this article we will go into the individual processes and different constellations step by step. Switching from an iPhone to a new iPhone is quite a bit different than switching from Android to iPhone, or vice versa. The goal is that all data and settings that were on the old device should be transferred seamlessly to the new device if possible. So read on to find out how you can successfully move to a new smartphone.

Part 1: Preparation

Part 1: Preparation

Before you discard your old smartphone, it is important that you back up all data. This includes contacts, calendar entries, photos, videos, music, documents and other important files.

Backup on Android devices

When it comes to securing an Android device from moving or data loss, there are several measures to take:

  • Syncing with a Google account: Android devices are closely associated with a Google account. Make sure your contacts, Calendar, emails and other important data are synchronized with your Google account. This automatically backs them up to the cloud and they can be restored after the move simply by signing in with the same Google account on the new device.
  • App data backup: Some apps offer the possibility to back up their data in the cloud. Check whether the apps you are using support this function and activate it if necessary. In this way you can ensure that your app data, such as saved games or settings, can be restored after the move.
  • Back up storage media: If you have important files such as photos, videos or documents on your Android device, you should make regular backups on external storage media. To do this, you can either use a microSD card or transfer the files to a computer. You can also use cloud storage services like Google Drive, Dropbox or OneDrive to automatically back up your files on a schedule.
  • Back up your passwords: Also, be sure to back up your saved passwords before you reset your device or set up a new device. You can use password manager apps like LastPass, Dashlane, or 1Password to securely store your passwords and access them when you need them on your new device. • Backup verification: Before you reset Android device or perform the move, you should make sure that all your important data has been backed up successfully. Go through the different backup options again and verify that all your data is there and has been backed up correctly.

Backup on iOS devices

If you are planning to move from one iOS device to another, it is important to back up your data to ensure you don’t lose any data. Fortunately, Apple offers various methods to backup your data on iOS devices and restore them to your new device.

  • iCloud Backup: Apple offers iCloud as a built-in cloud storage service that you can use to back up your data. Make sure your iCloud settings are turned on and perform regular backups to keep your photos, videos, contacts, calendar events, notes, messages and other important data safe. You can do this by going to “Settings”, then selecting your name, navigating to “iCloud” and making sure the data you want is turned on.
  • iTunes/Finder Backup: You can also back up your iOS device using iTunes (on older macOS versions) or Finder (on macOS Catalina and newer) save. Connect your iOS device to your computer, open iTunes or Finder, select your device and click “Back Up”. This creates a full backup of your device on your computer, including all settings, apps, data and media.
  • Back up important data manually: In addition to the automatic backups, you can also back up specific data manually. Check if you have important files like documents, music or videos that are not automatically included in iCloud or iTunes/Finder backup. Transfer these files to your computer to ensure they are not lost.
  • Transfer your apps: If you want to transfer your apps to your new iOS device, you should enable the “Automatic app downloads” option. This will automatically download the apps you had installed on your old device on your new device as soon as you sign in with your Apple ID account.
  • Check the backup: Make sure your backups completed successfully by checking the settings. Go to “Settings” > “iCloud” > “Manage Storage” (or “Storage & Backup” on older iOS versions) and check if your device’s backup is listed there.

Once you have set up your new iOS device, you can select the backup and restore your data and settings to it. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the recovery process. It is important to follow these steps carefully to ensure your data is properly backed up and restored to your new iOS device. By taking advantage of Apple’s built-in backup features, you can ensure a smooth and seamless transition to your new device.

Part 2: Data Transfer

Part 2: Data Transfer

After making sure that all your data is backed up, it’s time to transfer it to your new device. How you do this depends on the combination of the two devices you are using.

From Android to Android

First, make sure you are signed in with the same Google account on your new Android device as on your old device. This ensures that your apps, contacts, and other Google services are automatically synced.

There are several ways to transfer your apps and settings from one Android device to another:

  • Google Play Store: Open the Google Play Store on your new device and go to the “My apps and games” section. Here is a list of all the apps you had installed on your old device. You can select these apps individually and install them on your new device.
  • App backup and restore: Some apps offer their own backup and restore functionality. Check the apps settings to see if this option is available. If yes, backup your app data on your old device and restore it on your new device.
  • Settings: Navigate to your old Android device’s settings and look for the “Backup and reset” or “Backup and restore” option. Here you can save your settings and restore them to your new device.

Then transfer your files such as music, videos or documents from your old Android device to your new device. Again, you have different options:

  • USB cable: Connect your old Android device to your computer and manually transfer the files using a USB cable. Smartphones that are connected to the PC via USB are displayed as drives in the computer overview.
  • Cloud storage: Upload your files to a cloud storage service such as Google Drive, Dropbox or OneDrive and then download them to your new device.
  • SD card: If both your old and new devices have an SD card slot, you can copy the files to the SD card and then insert them into the new device.</ li>

After completing all the above steps, check if your data has been successfully transferred to your new Android device. Check your contacts, calendar events, apps, files, and settings to make sure everything is there.

From iOS to iOS

For iPhone users, Apple offers a “Quick Start” feature that automatically populates a new iPhone with data from an old iPhone when the two devices are in close proximity. If you can’t or don’t want to use this option, you can also restore your new iPhone from an iCloud or iTunes backup.

  • Set up your new iOS device
Turn on your new iOS device and follow the on-screen setup instructions until you get to Apps & Data.
From there, select the “Restore from iCloud Backup” option.
  • Sign in to your Apple ID
Enter your Apple ID and password to sign in to iCloud. Use the Apple ID that you used on your old iOS device.
  • Select the desired backup
A list of available iCloud backups will appear. Select the backup you want to use to restore to your new device. Check the backup date and size to make sure you choose the right one.
  • Start recovery
After selecting the backup, your new iOS device will start restoring your data. This may take some time depending on the size of your backup and how fast your internet connection is. Make sure your device stays connected to the internet and is not turned off or restarted during the restore process.
  • Configure your new iOS device
After the restore is complete, you will be prompted to continue the setup process. Follow the on-screen instructions to set the language, region, Wi-Fi connection, and other settings.
  • Check your data and settings
Go through your apps, contacts, photos, messages and other data to make sure everything was restored correctly. In most cases, your data, settings, and apps should be exactly the same on your new iOS device as they were on your old device.

Note: Not all apps may be automatically downloaded to your new device. Check the App Store on your new device, go to Purchases and manually download the missing apps.

From Android to iOS

If you are planning to switch from an Android smartphone to an iOS device, things work a little differently. To ensure a smooth move, proceed as follows:

Prepare your iOS device
Charge your iOS device and make sure it has enough battery life to complete the move. Make sure you have an active internet connection and enough storage space on the device to accommodate the transferred data.

Use the Transfer to iOS app
Apple offers a special app called “Transfer to iOS” which allows you to easily transfer your data from Android device to iOS device. Make sure both your Android and iOS devices are connected to the same WiFi network.

  • On your iOS device, go to the “Apps & Data” screen and select “Move to iOS”.
  • On your Android device, open the Google Play Store and search for the “Transfer to iOS” app.
  • Once installed, launch the app on your Android device and enter the code shown in the app.
  • Select the data you want to transfer such as contacts, messages, photos, videos, bookmarks and calendar events.
  • Wait for the transfer process to complete. Depending on the amount of data, this may take some time.

Configure your iOS device
Once the data transfer is complete, you can set up your iOS device. Follow the onscreen instructions to set your language, region, Apple ID, and other preferences. If you want your apps transferred from Android, you will be prompted to download them from the App Store.

Check your transferred data
After setting up your iOS device, check your transferred data to make sure everything was transferred successfully. Check your contacts, messages, photos, videos and other important files to make sure nothing has been lost.

Important: Not all data and settings can be transferred from Android to iOS. Some apps, widgets, wallpapers and specific settings may not be transferred. After all, you are switching to a completely new ecosystem here. In any case, make sure to manually back up important data before moving to ensure nothing is lost.

From iOS to Android

A smartphone migration from iOS to Android requires some effort, but it is quite doable. But with our tutorial you will also be able to make this move.

Back up your data on the iOS device
Make sure all your important data on iOS device is backed up as above.

Transfer your contacts

  • Sign in to your iCloud account on your iOS device.
  • Go to “Settings” > “your name” > “iCloud” and turn on “Contacts”.
  • Open a web browser on your computer and go to icloud.com.
  • Sign in with your iCloud account and select “Contacts”.
  • Check all contacts or just select the ones you want to transfer.
  • Click the gear icon in the bottom left corner and select “Export vCard”.
  • The vCard file will be downloaded to your computer.
  • Transfer the vCard file to your Android device, e.g. by email or USB cable.
  • Import the vCard file to your Android device. To do this, go to “Contacts” > “Menu” > “Import/Export” and select the vCard file.

Transfer photos and videos
You can transfer your photos and videos from your iOS device to your computer by connecting it with a USB cable and opening File Explorer (Windows) or Finder (Mac). Then copy the files you want from your iOS device to your computer, and transfer the photos and videos from your computer to your Android device.

Transfer your music
If you have your music in iTunes on iOS device, you can transfer iTunes library to your computer. To do this, open iTunes on your computer, go to Edit (Windows) or iTunes (Mac) > “Settings” > “Advanced” and activate “Show library file”. Then copy the iTunes library file to your computer and install the Android File Transfer App to transfer files between your computer and Android device.

Transfer your apps and data
Your iOS apps cannot be transferred to an Android device directly as the two operating systems are different. You need to re-download your apps from Google Play Store for Android. However, you can restore your accounts in the apps and sync your data if supported by the respective apps. Check the apps settings to see if syncing or data export is possible.

Again, the same applies here as when moving from Android to iOS. Namely that not all data and content can be transferred from iOS to Android, especially protected content like DRM protected music or certain app data. Make sure you check what data can and cannot be transferred before moving.

Part 3: Securely erase the old smartphone

Part 3: Securely erase the old smartphone

Before you sell, give away or recycle your old smartphone, you should securely delete all personal data. On both Android and iOS devices, you can find the factory reset option in Settings. Make sure to sign out the device from all accounts before resetting it.

While switching to a new smartphone requires a bit of work, especially when switching ecosystems (Android to iOS or iOS to Android), with the right preparation and tools, it’s actually a seamless and stress-free process. And then you can start enjoying your new smartphone to the fullest.
