Who is behind ChatGPT? – Who owns OpenAI?

The term “ChatGPT” has been on everyone’s lips since the end of 2022 at the latest. Schoolchildren are now doing their homework with the chatbot, and some bloggers are also happy to have an article written by the AI. But who is actually behind the company OpenAI which developed ChatGPT. Who are ChatGPT’s investors? Who is the CEO of ChatGPT? And who actually owns ChatGPT? And what does “GPT” actually stand for in Chat GPT?

In this article, we want to pursue these questions, at least to some extent. Because often you have to do a lot of research for some of the questions and compare the information several times to look behind the curtain. Who is behind OpenAI

Who is behind OpenAI

The question of who owns OpenAI is not so easy to answer. The company was set up by several major investors and companies, and is therefore not owned by a single person. OpenAI was founded in 2015 by a coalition of well-known figures in the technology industry. These included, for example, Elon Musk, Greg Brockman, Ilya Sutskever, John Schulman, Sam Altman and Wojciech Zaremba, and later Microsoft as the largest investors. The company started with approximately $1 billion in seed capital, aiming to advance AI research while ensuring that this technology is used for the greater good of society.

Co-founder Sam Altman is registered as CEO at OpenAI. Furthermore, Greg Brockman is part of the management of the company.
We will go into more detail later on about the people who are known as co-founders of OpenAI.

OpenAI is officially declared as a non-profit and independent non-profit organization. However, anyone who believes that the donors already mentioned only invest their money for the common good is of course wrong. An investment is called that because it should ultimately bring a return. Otherwise, it might be considered a donation at best. But even entrepreneurs only do something like that if, for example, a tax advantage and a little reputation jump out of it! These people didn’t get rich because they spent a lot of money, but because they invested a lot of money profitably. The OpenAI company could best be described as a joint venture, but certainly not as a non-profit project.

However, Elon Musk has not been on the OpenAI board since 2018. Officially, it was said that it was a possible conflict of interest with Tesla as a reason. According to reports to the contrary, Elon Musk himself wanted to take over the management of OpenAI, but the co-founders refused. As a result, Musk resigned from the board, and also cut an already planned large investment in the company. Exactly how it happened will probably remain hidden from the public. However, as is usually the case, the truth lies somewhere in between.

OpenAI employs some of the leading experts in the field of artificial intelligence, and has approximately 375 employees (as of January 2023). The company has a variety of research projects and initiatives. The company works on a variety of topics including speech recognition, image recognition, robotics, natural language processing and machine learning.

Although OpenAI has no subsidiaries or equity interests, the company has formed partnerships with a variety of organizations and companies, including Microsoft, Amazon, Intel, and others. OpenAI leverages these partnerships to pool resources and expertise to advance AI research.

Overall, OpenAI can be considered one of the leading companies in the field of AI research that is actively involved in the creation and dissemination of AI technologies.
