Google Nest cuts smart home products

Smart home voice assistants seem to be on the decline. Because not only Amazon has not had the success one had hoped for with its Alexa language assistant. The project was actually intended to increase sales by allowing users to quickly make small purchases using the language assistant. But the customers didn’t want that at all. Instead, more and more functions were deleted or changed so that voice commands and functions suddenly no longer worked. With Google Nest with the Google Assistant, which has long been standard on smartphones, the big advantage over the competing product from Amazon was always that Google was simply able to process significantly more knowledge questions.

Switching the light on and off and operating other compatible smart home devices can both. But users expect more from such a product. But it is also the case that both Google and Amazon have heavily subsidized their smart home assistants in order to keep the price attractive for the end consumer. The only thing that was missing for both of them or where they had miscalculated was a viable concept to increase sales through the language assistants.

Of course, the data protection that applies in this country did not necessarily make it easier to simply use the devices as data collectors. Because listening all the time is not in it. Only the speech recognition could certainly be improved on both systems. Now, as has been the case with Amazon for a long time, the teams and products from Google are now also under attack. In the future, it will probably be the users who will suffer the most.

Google Nest on a retreat

Google Nest on a retreat

In 2014, the smart home space grew in importance and Google strengthened itself by acquiring Nest, a company that would launch numerous new products in the coming years. The acquisition of Nest cost Google a whopping $3.2 billion and aimed to release future products under the “Google Nest” brand. The previous sub-brand “Google Home” was renamed “Google Nest”, leaving only the app of the same name for controlling smart home devices.

Over the years that followed, Nest significantly expanded its portfolio in the smart home space. The company continued its business with smart smoke detectors and thermostats, and also launched smart speakers, smart displays, surveillance cameras, a whole security system, wifi routers and other smaller products. Despite this, the “Google Nest” or simply “Nest” brand has not been well received by users as some products have already been discontinued and more discontinuations are imminent.

Google Smart Speaker

A few years ago, Google achieved surprising success with the “Google Home Mini”. Launched in response to the Echo Dot, this product was intended to establish the Google Assistant as the smart home hub. Two years later, a slightly modified version of the product was released under the name “Nest Mini”, but no information on sales figures is known. Another year later, the “Nest Audio” appeared as the successor to the successful Google Home Smart Speaker. However, according to reports, this one was not particularly successful either.

The Nest Audio was launched two and a half years ago and there have been no further developments since then. Due to the sharp reduction in the Google Assistant, it seems difficult to launch new smart speakers at the moment.

Google Smart Displays

Nest’s first smart display was actually just a rebranded Google Home smart display. The last new product of this type was launched two years ago. In the meantime, however, Google has reduced the functions of the Nest Hub and, thanks to the Fuchsia upgrade, regards it almost exclusively as a field for experimentation. It is therefore unlikely that Google will launch any more smart displays in the future. Instead, the company seems to be handing over this category to the Pixel Tablet and thus to the Pixel brand for the time being.

Google Cameras & Doorbells

Nest’s camera division was formed through the acquisition of Dropcam. Recently, however, the company announced the demise of Dropcam and, in parallel, opened up the Google Home app to other brands of security cameras. It can therefore be assumed that Nest is currently in the process of reducing the camera department or even discontinuing it altogether in the medium term. This also fits with other developments in the company.

Google Smart Home-Security

Nest’s entire security system was shut down some time ago. The few remaining products such as motion detectors, window contacts or the alarm center will soon no longer work. These products would have paired very well with the smoke alarm, security cameras, and smart displays, and would have made for a perfect merging of all Nest products. Apparently this didn’t work though. To this day, Google sells bundles of cameras and smart displays in its own online shop. Although these are of course useful, they would have made even more sense in combination with an alarm system.

Google Works with Nest

Not only has the Nest Secure security system been discontinued, but the Works with Nest program will also stop working shortly. However, this program was not only marketing, but also an actual software bridge to external devices. Once Google Nest turns off this bridge, the external devices will no longer be usable with Nest devices.

Google Smoke Alarms and Thermostats

It seems that Google Nest may only have two product categories left that could linger. However, Google hasn’t made any major announcements in either of these areas for a while. Interestingly, it is precisely these two products that led to Google taking over Nest at the time. If you look at the costly failures and challenges that Google has experienced in acquiring Nest, you might conclude that despite Google’s involvement, the acquisition was more of a setback.
