November 24, 2025: Unions demand “robot tax”, consumers use AI to fight price increases, weather AI prevents disaster
Monday, November 24, 2025
Automation is becoming political: Major unions are reacting to the deployment of humanoid robots with demands for new levies. In online retail, customers are fighting back against dynamic pricing this week with their own AI-powered weapons, and in Italy, an algorithm is saving cultural heritage.
Here are the most important AI news stories of the day:
Reaction to Tesla & Co: Transatlantic trade union alliance calls for “robot tax”
What was celebrated as a technological breakthrough on Friday (Tesla robots working autonomously on the assembly line) has become a political issue on Monday morning. The German metalworkers’ union IG Metall and the US-based United Auto Workers (UAW) presented a joint initiative today.
The demand: The introduction of an “automation compensation levy” (colloquially: robot tax). For every hour of work performed by a humanoid robot instead of a human, companies would have to pay a contribution into social security funds. Since robots do not pay income tax, the social security system is threatened with collapse if they are used on a massive scale. “Those who replace jobs must also support the welfare state,” was the gist of the press conference in Berlin.
Business associations immediately warned of an “innovation brake” that would drive production to unregulated countries. The debate is likely to become the dominant political issue of the winter.
Black Friday Arms Race: “Price-Shield” apps against dynamic pricing
With the start of Black Friday week, the technological arms race between retailers and shoppers is escalating.
Major online stores are deploying aggressive dynamic pricing AIs that adjust prices for individual customers every minute based on their browsing behavior and device type (often upwards).
The customer response: Consumer advocates are recommending the new price-shield apps that are currently dominating the app store charts.
These AI agents disguise the user’s identity, simulate disinterest to fool the store’s algorithm, and automatically purchase the product at the millisecond when the price is historically lowest. It’s the first widespread use of “defense AI” in the consumer sector.
Weather AI “GraphCast Pro” saves Venice from damage
A success story comes from Italy today. The new AI weather model “GraphCast Pro” (an evolution of Google’s DeepMind) prevented severe damage in Venice over the weekend. An unusual, rapidly developing low-pressure system threatened to overwhelm the city with extreme “acqua alta” (high water).
The AI success: Traditional physical models failed to detect the danger up to six hours in advance. However, the AI recognized subtle patterns in global pressure data 48 hours ahead and warned the authorities.
The MO.S.E. flood control system was able to be activated in time. Experts are celebrating this as definitive proof that AI weather models are superior to conventional simulations in extreme weather situations.
Attack and defense
This Monday is all about “action and reaction.” Unions (Story 1) are building a political shield against automation. Consumers (Story 2) are using digital shields against price manipulation. And in nature (Story 3), AI is serving as a literal shield against the elements.
