YouTube advertising for private videos without consent

Benjamin Franklin once said (in a general sense): Nothing in this world is safe, except death and taxes. Today you could add advertising to that. Because no one escapes that, and even worse than that annoys them, it is getting more and more. On the relevant news channels in Germany, for example, it is now common practice that an advertising block comes every 20 minutes, and that is not enough, advertising and product placement are interspersed within the actual news.

And on YouTube, too, users have had to get used to more and more advertising over time. But in the future it could get even more dramatic, and maybe get more people to subscribe to YouTube Premium.

The right to monetize YouTube

Regardless of which medium you use today, you simply have to live with advertising. And yes, we also advertise on our website because there is no other way. Because the operation, the security, and the content behind a website not only cost time, but also money. On the other hand, you can overdo it with advertising, and it sometimes seems as if there is more (and aggressive) advertising on a page than the actual content.

As a website operator, something like this should of course be avoided as much as possible. And what applies to websites, this applies even more to video streaming platforms such as YouTube. YouTube has belonged to Google since October 2006, and since then the number of users and the mass of content have increased steadily. It is estimated that around 400 hours of video material is uploaded to YouTube per minute, which first of all has to be stored somewhere, and the necessary infrastructure must also be created to accommodate the estimated 1.9 billion users who use the platform every day worldwide with HD and To be able to supply 4K content at the same time.

Admittedly, Google is an incredibly rich company and has annual sales well over 100 billion US dollars worldwide. But Google is a global company that consists of many subsidiaries, and it wants and must also generate profits in order to be able to continue investing in the future.

As already mentioned at the beginning, advertising has already increased dramatically, and the YouTube Premium service for € 11.99 is being advertised much more prominently, with which you will then also be spared advertising and also benefit from a few other benefits.

YouTube advertising possible on all channels

Participants in the YouTube affiliate program try to produce good content that gets as many clicks as possible. This is the only way to attract better advertising partners for the fade-ins, and only in this way can the income in which both YouTube and the content creator are involved increase. So it’s a win-win situation for both of them when the content is good and the views are high. Some well-known YouTubers can actually not only make a living from the income, but get really wealthy through their work.

The situation is different with private videos, where people just upload videos that are intended for a very small target group or restricted group of people. An example of this would be when videos of online multiplayer rounds are uploaded to make them accessible to all participants. This video material was never produced to earn money with it, but only “Just for Fun”.

And it is precisely this content that the change in YouTube’s terms of use is aimed at. The first step is not to immediately flood all videos with advertising, but to grant yourself the right to import advertising at your own discretion. And not only at their own discretion, but above all without the financial participation of the authors who uploaded the video material.

As usual, changes to the terms of use are a unilateral agreement. As a content producer, your tacit consent applies or, alternatively, you can simply delete your content from the platform if you do not want advertisements to be displayed. Another option is of course to become a participant in the YouTube partner program and to participate in the monetization. However, it should be said that your content then has to be really good in order for you to achieve the appropriate number of clicks. Because in order to earn even halfway respectable amounts with YouTube advertising, you need a whole lot of views.

And then we are talking about calls in the 5-6 digit range. With a few thousand clicks, at most, alms (if at all) will get around. We do not assume that in the short term there will be ads everywhere in private videos, but in the medium to long term there will definitely be more advertising than before.

We also think that YouTube will first take a closer look at all the private videos and channels, and sound out where advertising could be lucrative. Because the advertisers also have to pay for every click and want to hit the target group for their advertisements as precisely as possible in order to generate more sales afterwards.

There is a fine line on YouTube that moves with it, because too much advertising could result in a decrease in user numbers. On the other hand, YouTube is well aware of its dominant market position, and it could also lead to more people subscribing to the YouTube Premium service.
