What is Bluesky?
What is Bluesky?
Bluesky was originally created by Twitter founder Jack Dorsey as a project called to life. However, as of 2021, Bluesky is an independent company and is no longer funded by Twitter. Bluesky’s CEO is Jay Graber, a software development expert. Jack Dorsey and Jeremie Miller, the developer of the XMPP/Jabber communication protocol, are members of the board of directors, according to a tweet from Bluesky.
Bluesky is a new microblogging platform that looks and works similar to Twitter. The company behind the app aims to develop a protocol for decentralized networks on the Internet. This protocol enables a decentralized structure of the network and the exchange of content across different online services. Twitter founder Jack Dorsey explained the vision and technology behind Bluesky, an innovative social network.
- Bluesky differs from traditional social networks because of its federated structure. Instead of storing data on a central server, Bluesky allows users and companies to choose their own servers for data storage. The AT protocol ensures smooth communication between these different servers. As Dorsey points out, “There isn’t just one site running the network, there can be many.
- Bluesky is striving to move from platforms to protocols, eliminating the need for users to rely on private companies to communicate with each other. “Public debate should take place outside of private companies, just like the Internet itself,” says the technology company’s website.
Bluesky’s goal is to create a new foundation for social networks that gives creators platform independence, developers the freedom to develop, and users the power to shape their experiences. Another advantage of Bluesky is that users have control over the algorithm.
“Algorithms determine what we see and who we can reach. If we want to have trust in our online spaces, we need to be in control of our algorithms. The AT protocol supports open algorithms to give users more control over their experience.”
In addition, Bluesky promises a particularly fast loading time and improved coordination of various networked services.

How to use Bluesky?
How to use Bluesky?
Although the Bluesky app is already available in the Apple and Google app stores, it is is still in beta (as of June 2023). In order to be able to use the app, you need an invitation code for testers. You can either be put on a waiting list or receive an invitation code once a week from an already registered Bluesky user. It’s not yet known when the app will open to everyone. Around 50,000 users are currently activated, and prominent people from politics, start-ups and the entertainment industry have registered.
Here one has probably deliberately relied on people from public life who will subsequently also serve as ambassadors and magnets for the platform.
How does the Bluesky app work?
The Bluesky app is very similar in design and functionality to Twitter. Users can create a username with an @ handle, set a profile picture and background, and view their followed and followed accounts. Posts have a maximum length of 256 characters and may include photos. There is a search function for accounts, and other accounts can be muted or blocked. Similar to Twitter, posts are divided into posts and replies, and users can like, share, and reply to posts. There is also a discovery page with recent posts and recommendations based on a profile’s posts.
Slowly but surely there is movement in the markets for social media platforms. It remains to be seen whether the whole thing will prevail. As always, the hardest part will be the starting phase. But with 50,000 people who have already registered with Bluesky before the start (as of June 2023), a good basis has already been created.
